‘Today…..she’s coming today!’ said Megghan. ‘That’s what Maman said,’ said Babette.
‘Maman said she should be here before luncheon and that we would wait to eat after she gets here.
‘Who is coming?’ asked Lydie. ‘Our new sister,’ said Megghan ‘she is coming all the way from Indiana..’
‘But who is she?’ said Lydie. ‘Yes and is she pretty?’ said Diva coming into the room. ‘Of course she’s pretty, said Megghan ‘she’s a Premiere…..a BLONDE Premeire.’ ‘Is she prettier than me?’ said Diva. ‘She’s a Premiere,’ said Megghan…. ‘ a PREMIERE!!!’ ‘Oh, oui,’ said Diva … ‘ but is she prettier than me? What is her name?’ ‘Maureen,’ said Babette ‘her name is Maureen.’ ‘Ah tres bien...it is not a French name...it is an Irish name is it not,’ said Diva ‘I think an Irish named girl would not be prettier than me...would you not think so?’ “DIVA!!!” said Babette and Megghan together ‘You are impossible,’ said Babette ‘stop thinking about yourself and think about Maureen for a minute. It is cold out today and Maman said Maureen will have no clothes with her and we are to find her something to wear until Maman can get her some clothes of her own.’ ‘You mean SHARE my….our…..clothes!!’ said Diva….. ‘you can’t really mean that!!!’ ‘Yes Diva, we DO mean that,’ said Babette ‘ now come and help us decide what should be for Maureen, we need to have some clothes ready for her, think how embarrassed she would be with nothing to put on….now come let us go and look.’
‘Oh look,’ said Babette ‘this would be nice on a Premiere.’ ‘But that is Honore’s,’ said Diva ‘it is her most special dress…. I do not think Maureen should have this dress...let us look again.’ ‘How about this,’ said Babette or this?’ ‘But that is MY dress,’ said Diva ‘it is the one I came here in and the other is the one Lydie came here in. Our birth Maman Vicki made them for US…. I do not think Maureen would like these...no… they are not for a Premiere...let us look some more….and… I see you do not pull out the dress YOU came in...the one Vicki made for you!’ ‘It is a Christmas dress,’ said Babette ‘Maureen would not want to wear a Christmas dress in March!!’ ‘Oh,’ said Diva … ‘well…..well…… let us look again.’
‘ Oh dear,’ said Babette ‘all of these dresses either belong to Honore or Rachelle or are Christmas dresses or are from the 1920’s Patternthon and I do not think a Premiere would look good in those.’ ‘Look at this,’ said Diva ‘here is a hanky dress that none of us have worn...let us give it to Maureen, it would be pretty on a blonde too….. and I think a Premiere could wear a hanky dress ….yes… I do!’
‘Thank you,’ said a muffled voice coming into the room ‘I should like to wear this hanky dress for a while until Maman woot makes me my own special trousseau, but right now Maman woot says I have caught a chill waiting so long for you to bring me something to wear and that I am to ask you to give me the special nightwear that she has been saving and that it should be mine and I am to go to bed for a while to rest and get warm. Maman woot also said that one of you would get me a nice hot cup of tea too. …. Show me please where is the nightwear and I shall put it on and try to get warm...aaaahhhhh choo!!!’
‘Oh dear,’ said Babette ‘come quickly and we will get you dressed and into a nice warm bed….we are so sorry you have caught a chill waiting...but we did not know you were even here yet and we did so want to find the right thing for you to wear.’ ‘I think you have chosen for me beautifully...thank you,’ said Maureen ‘I shall enjoy wearing it very much….aaaaaahhhh choo!!!!’
‘Here, put this on,’ said Megghan ‘And this warm bed jacket too,’ said Lydie. ‘Now come and get into bed,’ said Babette ‘and we will get you some hot tea.’ ‘ AND cookies,’ said Maureen. ‘Cookies!!’ said Diva … ‘did Maman say you were to have cookies right before luncheon?’ ‘Well….no..’ said Maureen ‘but I am so very hungry… I have traveled a long way you know.’ ‘We ALL did,’ said Diva and we all remember...it wasn’t so bad.’ ‘That’s alright Maureen,’ said Babette ‘we’ll ask Maman if you can have some cookies too.’ ‘Oh...and here,’ said Lydie ‘here is a special friend to snuggle with.’ ‘Thank you,’ said Maureen ‘that is very sweet of you. I think I shall like being your big sister.’ ‘Our BIG sister...but you just got here!!’ said Megghan, ‘you are the new girl!’ ‘Mai oui,’ said Maureen … ‘but I am older than all of you so of course I shall be your big sister!’
‘Come on,’ said Babette ‘let us go and get some tea and cookies for Maureen.’ ‘And maybe some books and magazines to look at please,’ said Maureen … ‘that would be nice.’ ‘Alright Maureen we will be right back,’ said Lydie ‘and we will bring you some.
‘Isn’t she pretty,’ said Lydie as the girls went to get the things for Maureen. ‘Yes,’ said Babette ‘she is very pretty.’ ‘Prettier than me?’ asked Diva… ‘is she prettier than me?’ ‘Hush Diva,’ said Megghan ‘we have got problems….yes she is very pretty but I do not like this BIG sister thing...we were all just sisters before she got here...all just the same and all good friends….now SHE wants to be our BIG sister...and look… she has already got Lydie thinking she is just wonderful!!! I don’t like this…. I don’t like it at all!!’
‘But Megghan,’ said Babette ‘maybe she IS older than us...so that WOULD make her our big sister… maybe she didn’t mean anything by it...she seems really sweet to me...remember...she is cold and tired and hungry AND alone in a new place and probably missing her sisters….let us give her a chance...alright? I want us to be extra nice to her and help her to get settled in...poor thing...getting a chill like that, I know she does not feel well, now let us get her some tea and cookies.’
‘Here Maureen,’ said Babette ‘I hope this hot tea helps you to feel better. Maman sent you some sandwiches and cookies too. Maman said you are to stay in bed for a while and if you feel better later you may get up. We are going to have our luncheon now and then we must practice for a while before we have our free time. We will come for you then to see if you feel like getting up.’
‘Thank you,’ said Maureen ‘you have made me most welcome, I shall be quite comfortable I think. Practice….what is it that you practice?’ ‘Well,’ said Megghan ‘Honore plays the piano and Rachelle dances, Babette sings, Diva is good at drawing and Lydie recites beautifully.’ ‘And what do you do?’ said Maureen. ‘Well,…. I like to do fancy needlework,’ said Megghan. ‘Oh good,’ said Maureen ‘then you can make me things….. I should like that very much… I like to dress in pretty clothes but I am not accomplished like you are in the needlearts… I should like to see some of your work… I would be pleased if you would show it to me.’ ‘Well,’ said Megghan ‘I would be glad to show you some of my pieces, and I would also be glad to teach you how to do it ….it is not hard and I am sure that someone as lovely as you must have many talents as well… I am sure you could learn and then just think of all the pretty things YOU could make for yourself.’ ‘Oh, well, yes,’ said Maureen ‘I could learn….in fact I already know how to do ALL the stitches of course, but that is just not where my talents lay, I just do not have the knack to do pretty needlework.’ ‘Oh,’ said Lydie ‘where do your talents lay, I just know it is something exciting!’ ‘Why, bless you,’ said Maureen you are so sweet, and yes it is exciting...my talents lean towards the theatre ...I like to act… I ALWAYS get the lead in the school plays.’ ‘Ohhh…’ said Lydie quietly ‘do you….that is nice..’ ‘Come on girls,’ said Babette ‘ or we will be late for luncheon, goodbye Maureen...we will see you later, I hope you will soon be feeling better.’
‘Ohhhhh…’ said Megghan “you can make me things”… ‘what nerve!!!’ ‘Hush, Megghan,’ said Babette ‘she will hear you!’ ‘I don’t care,’ said Megghan ‘and she’s NOT going to get the lead in our school play either, so don’t you worry Lydie.’ ‘How do you know that?’ said Babette ‘Because,’ said Megghan ‘there is no lead...we are doing Little Women and there are four leads and I get to direct it...AND… I already have the parts planned. You, Babette shall be Meg, and Rachelle shall be Jo. You Lydie shall be Amy and Diva you shall be Beth.’ ‘Oh NO!!’ said Diva … ‘Beth...oh I do not think I shall like to be Beth...why...she dies in the story...no...I should not like to be Beth...let ME be Amy… I am an artist and SHE is the artist in the story..AND the pretty one...remember her pretty long blonde curls...ohhhhhh.. long blonde curls… well alright Lydie...you be Amy and we shall curl your hair.’ ‘But my hair does not curl,’ said Lydie it is so straight!’ ‘We will MAKE it curl,’ said Megghan ‘Miss. Goldilocks in there is NOT going to be in MY play!!!’ ‘But Megghan.. I still do not wish to play Beth, I do not wish to die...let Honore do that part...she plays the piano anyway and Beth is the one who played the piano in the story.’ ‘Alright,’ said Megghan ‘but Honore is also writing the music for it as it is to be a musical.’ ‘ Oh how fun,’ said Babette ‘I just love musicals.’
‘Well, Diva,’ said Megghan ‘you shall be in our next play then. ‘What is that?’ asked Diva. ‘Oh, next we are doing Anne of Green Gables and I am to play Anne…...you shall play Diana.’ ‘But she was PLUMP!!’ squealed Diva ‘do you think I am plump…...am I plump… ohhh I shall eat no luncheon, ohh I shall….’ ‘DIVA!’ said Megghan ‘you are NOT plump...but remember...Diana was very pretty and she had dark hair so you shall be a delightful Diana.’ ‘Oh,’ said Diva ‘I am to be Diana because I am pretty, alright…..thank you then, I shall play the part of the Lovely Diana!’ ‘Maybe,’ giggled Megghan ‘we should do a play based on Little House On The Prairie, then Maureen could be Nellie Olsen,’ and the girls all giggled together as they went to luncheon.
‘Oh, Maureen,’ said Babette as the girls came into the room ‘you are up and dressed, are you feeling better then? The hanky dress looks lovely on you.’ ‘Thank you,’ said Maureen ‘it does become me does it not,...yes you have chosen for me prettily. I am feeling a little better now, but no I am not yet well. I did so want to get up though, it was lonesome in here with no one to talk to.’ ‘Well, we have finished practice now,’ said Babette ‘and we have no homework today as it is spring break, so no school all this week. That is why we were home today when you arrived, normally we would be in school. We were going to play some games before dinner, would you like to play Monopoly with us?’ ‘Oh yes,’ said Maureen ‘I should like that very much.’
‘Tell us what it was like in Indiana,’ said Lydie. ‘Oh yes please,’ said the other girls. ‘It is much colder in Indiana,’ said Maureen ‘why here it is already spring and everything is blooming, it is so pretty here. I do not so much like the cold in Indiana.’ ‘Did you have any sisters there?’ asked Megghan. ‘Oh yes,’ said Maureen I had many sisters and Maman Cindy had many wonderful things for us.’
‘Did you have any real bleuettes there?’ asked Lydie. ‘Real bleuettes,’ said Maureen ‘what do you mean real bleuettes?’ ‘REAL bleuettes,’ said Lydie ‘you know, the Real bleuettes that are very old, not like us, we aren’t real you know, we are all just reproductions.’ ‘Why,’ said Maureen ‘do you have any here?’ ‘Oh yes,’ said Lydie ‘we have Tallis Murielle, she is so sweet and she is a REAL bleuette too, a 60 8/0.’ ‘Oh my dears.’ said Maureen ‘what makes her more real than you except the fact that she is real old, ...why, are you not both made of real porcelain, do you not both have real glass eyes and real wigs. I think you will find that you are every bit as real in your Maman’s heart as any what you call REAL bleuette. Why, they were made quickly and, many times, with out much care, made in great quantities to fill the demand for more dolls. Now YOU, you were made one precious doll at a time with great care by talented doll artists who made you with love and expertise, being sure that each thing about you was as perfect as she could make it. Then you were adopted into loving homes, to be a joy, a spark of happiness in you new Maman’s life. No, you are every bit as real as any of the REAL bleuettes you speak of, always remember that. You are much cherished bleuettes, real in you own right and no less precious than your older sisters.’
‘Oh Maureen,’ said Megghan ‘we never though of it like that….we are so glad you came to be our BIG sister!!!’
