The Spring Fashion Show
‘Is this not just so exciting,’ said Lydie ‘I could not believe it when I heard that we were chosen to be in the school spring fashion show.’ ‘Well, you know why do you not,’ said Babette
Rosette Gabrielle is in the sewing class that is sponsoring it and she offered us as models.’
‘Yes,’ said Honore ‘but is it not sad that they can use only five of us.’ ‘Oh, but did you not know,’ said Megghan ‘that the others will all take part too. ‘Maureen is to do the narration, and Rachelle is to open the evening with a dance and the rest have been busy helping with the decorations, so we will all be included.’ …. ‘AND’ said Diva ‘most important of all is the part Rosette Gabrielle will play...why she has to MAKE all of our dresses. Was it not just the most fun to look through all the patterns and choose which one you wanted to wear and then to be able to choose from all those pretty fabrics.’ ‘Yes,’ said Babette ‘ it was , but I think you could have been kinder to Rosette Gabrielle, Diva. You know she said the one YOU chose would be very hard to make...but you had to insist on that pattern… AND….then she said the fabric you chose was not right for it either ...but would you listen...NO...and now poor Rosette Gabrielle must make that wretched outfit you chose. The rest of us all asked her advice on which pattern and fabric she would like to use for us but NO you had to be “Miss. Important” and choose the hardest pattern they had there, and poor Rosette Gabrielle is going to be graded on her work...NICE sister you turned out to be… I hope when you have to take sewing class that you have the same thing happen to you.’
‘Fiddlesticks !’ said Diva ‘why, Rosette Gabrielle sews tres beautifully and my outfit shall be tres magnifique...why….it was the most impressive pattern there…...just think… it has three pieces ...plus a darling little hat...ah mais oui...un beau chapeau...and I shall look tres elegant in it…. I can just see it now with the most wonderful scalloped hem and jacket and in such a pretty pink spring check… ohhh tres tres chic !!!’
‘ We will all look wonderful,’ said Megghan ‘I just can not wait! ‘Tomorrow we will get to try our outfits on’ … said Lydie ‘I will hardly be able to sleep I am so excited!’ ‘Well,’ said Babette ‘we had better get to sleep or Maman will come in here and then we will have to do
extra chores tomorrow for staying up so late AND have to go to bed early tomorrow night.’ ‘Yes, do let us get to sleep,’ said Honore ‘otherwise, if we have extra chores to do we may be late for the fitting tomorrow night’… ‘Or...not be allowed to go,’ said Megghan. ‘Shhhh..bonne nuit...good night!’
‘Oh, did you not know,’ said Lydie….. who was still too excited to sleep…. ‘Rosette Gabrielle is bringing the outfits home tonight and we shall try them on here tomorrow after school.’
“Ohhhh,’ said Diva ‘HERE...she is bringing them HERE!!!... Oh… I wonder if they are already here...oh do come and let us go and look.’…. ‘Now you know we can not disturb Rosette Gabrielle while she is doing her homework,’ said Babette.’ ‘Oh, but can you not hear,’ said Diva ‘she is in the parlor and has just started to practice the piano, she will be at least another half an hour...oh...do come...hurry now.’ ‘Have you forgotten that we are supposed to be in bed,’ said Babette ‘just what do you think would happen to us if we were caught in Rosette Gabrielle’s room where we have no permission to be...and after bedtime too. Ohhh…. it would be too bad for us..just too bad.’
‘Phoey, I’m not afraid of being caught,’ said Diva .. ‘I want to see our outfits NOW…...come do...let us go. Who is coming with me.’ ‘Oh, I will,’ said Megghan ‘I am kind of excited about seeing them too.’ ‘Good,’ said Diva ‘who else...now let us go.’ Oh, look,’ said Babette… ‘shhh… the others are already asleep, I guess that because they are not modeling any of the outfits they are not as excited about seeing them as the rest of us, and now that you have got us all excited about seeing them Diva, I know that I could not get to sleep, so come hurry, let us go and see them.’
‘Oh how disappointing,’ said Lydie ‘ I do not see any of them in here.’ ‘Oh, you silly,’ said Diva. ‘ DIVA !! ’, said Babette ‘that was NOT nice.’ ‘Well, she IS being silly,’ said Diva ‘anyone would know that they would be hanging in the wardrobe NOT just laying around the room…. let us look.’ ‘Oh,’ said Lydie ‘ I did not even think
about it…. I was so excited I just expected to see them all the minute we walked in. You are right Diva...silly me !!!’ ‘Hurry,’ said Diva ‘let us look ….. open it quickly Megghan.
‘Ohh,’ said Megghan ‘they are not in here.’ ‘Oh my,’ said Lydie ‘maybe Rosette Gabrielle did not bring them home today after all, but I know I heard her tell Maman that she would bring them home tonight… ..I know it !!’ ‘Well,’ said Megghan ‘maybe they are in Maman’s wardrobe...let us go and …..’ “NO ! !” said the others at once. ‘We can not go and look in Maman’s wardrobe,’ said Babette ‘it is one thing to come in here...but Maman would be very cross with us indeed if we were to go and look in her wardrobe. ‘Wait,’ said Lydie ‘we do not have to, see they are here, all hanging up behind this screen and they all look so lovely. Now all of you sit down and I shall try mine on first and model it for you and we can take turns.’
‘Are you ready,’ said Lydie ‘here is mine, is it not just perfect for me.. oui..!!’ ‘Oh Lydie,’ said Babette ‘it is wonderful...it is just you…. Rosette Gabrielle has done well… oh do hurry and let us try ours on too.’ ‘Alright,’ said Lydie ‘I will hurry, Babette, you go next and then Honore and Megghan, then Diva you shall have the place of honor, the last one to model is always the most important.’ ‘Oh, do hurry,’ said Diva ‘I can not wait to see how beautiful I shall be in this wonderful new ensemble that Rosette Gabrielle has made just for me….
‘Now Diva it is your turn...hurry now, we can not wait to see you,’ said Lydie. ‘ OH, mais non….this can not be….’ said Diva …. ‘c’est terrible...it is terrible… I can not wear this… I shall look a fool! ! ! ….. ‘Diva !!...What is wrong,’ said Megghan ‘come out and let us see you.’ ‘ Mai non,’ said Diva ’I shall never be seen by anyone in this ...this…. ohhhh it is awful ! !’ ‘Come on Diva,’ said Babette ‘let us see … it can not be that bad….why...all of ours were just wonderful.’ ‘Ohhh, but it IS bad,’ wailed Diva ‘it is terrible, what am I to dooooooo! ! I can not …. no… I WILL NOT wear this in the fashion show...look...just LOOK at me !!!’
‘We….ll,’ said Megghan… … I … I….you…….. you……. giggle.... giggle….giggle… ohhh Diva..you are right... it is just too terrible ! !’ ‘Oh my,’ said Honore ‘she is right, she can not wear this in the fashion show at school, but if she does not, will she not hurt Rosette Gabrielle’s feelings.’ ‘Ohhh, worse than that,’ said Babette ‘what about her grade...why Rosette Gabrielle will get a bad grade with this one...oh dear… is there not ANYTHING that we can do to make it look better.’ ‘Oh,’ said Megghan ‘I hear Rosette Gabrielle saying good night to Mamman… quick...we must hurry and get out of here…… help Diva to get out of those clothes...quickly now,…. we must not be caught!!’
‘My, that was close,’ said Babette ‘we just got back here in time.’ ‘You know I have been thinking,’ said Megghan ‘maybe Diva’s outfit is not yet finished.’ ‘Oh, yes...it is finished alright,’ said Diva. ‘Well,’ said Babette, ‘ I think that the best thing to do is to say nothing at all and just let Rosette Gabrielle see what it looks like...maybe she will be able to fix it up.’ ‘Maybe she will like it,’ said Diva ‘after all she must have put a lot of time into it, and then I shall HAVE to wear it and I can not….mais non… I just can not!!’ ‘I’m sorry Diva,’ said Lydie giving Diva a hug, ‘it will work out alright, you shall see...but it is very late now and we must get to bed..try not to worry about it… I am sure Rosette Gabrielle will do something to fix it...now we must say our prayers and get to sleep.
THE NEXT DAY..........
‘Oh,’ said Lydie ‘I am so glad...no homework tonight...how about you Megghan.’ ‘I just have a little to do...it will not take me long.’ ‘I just have a little too,’ said Babette. ‘I did mine in study hall,’ said Honore. ‘Oh woe,’ said Diva ‘I have hours and hours of homework… I shall be lucky to be finished if I work steadily from now until bed time, I must go and get started.’ …. ‘Oh, poor Diva,’ said Lydie
‘surely she will be finished by the time we are to try on our outfits for Rosette Gabrielle.’ ‘Maybe someone should help her,’ said Megghan ‘how about you Honore, you are so smart.’ ‘I do not think that Diva needs help with her homework,’ said Honore ‘I think Diva is using homework as an excuse to not have to try on her outfit.’ ‘ Ohhh,’ said Lydie ‘what are we to do,……. oh my, here comes Rosette Gabrielle.’ ‘Hello girls,’ said Rosette Gabrielle ‘please go up to my room and put on your outfits then come to the parlor so that Maman and I can see them to see if everything is alright or if anything needs some last minute alterations...hurry now… … Maman is waiting.’ ‘Oh oh, is she going to be in for a surprise,’ said Megghan… ‘I don’t think that last minute alterations will be much help with Diva.’
‘Is everyone ready,’ said Babette… ‘let us go and show Mamman and Rosette Gabrielle.’ ‘Oh, I can not… I just can not,’ said Diva …. ‘Yes you can,’ said Babette ‘come...maybe they will have an idea of how to make this look better.’ ‘NOTHING will make this look better,’ said Diva bursting into tears. ‘Hush now, or you will make Rosette Gabrielle feel really bad...she does not yet know what this will look like on you...and when she sees it she will feel bad enough without seeing you cry too...now..come on everyone…..we must go.’
‘Oh girls,’ said Rosette Gabrielle ‘you look wonderful, just wonderful, you will all be so pretty in the fashion show... now... where is Diva.’ ‘Oh, she…. she… she is coming,’ said Megghan ‘here she is.’ ‘Oh DIVA ! ! !’ ...said Rosette Gabrielle appalled… oh Diva... that is not for you...oh my...I have been so busy I forgot to tell you…. I am so sorry… The headmistress had already chosen that pattern for her daughter and she loved the fabric you had chosen for it and she asked me to make it up for her…. You know Lizzelle is a good bit bigger than you. Why….oh dear you do look a sight in that don’t you...giggle ...giggle. I am so sorry...did you think you were going to have to wear that...oh you poor thing...let me give you a hug.’ ‘ But what am I to wear then,’ said Diva.
‘Well,’ said Rosette Gabrielle ‘the Headmistress said there was not time for you to choose something else and there be time to make it up ...so she has chosen you to model something very special.
You know the dress that is very popular this spring…..the hanky dress, well, the Headmistress wishes to use it for the singers in the spring concert… all different colors. Tante Meg is making them and the Headmistress has chosen you to model the dress at the end of the fashion show as a big surprise.’ ‘Oh,’ said Diva ‘ how exciting...what is it like... is it pretty...can we see it.’ ‘I do not have it here,’ said Rosette Gabrielle ‘Tante Meg is sending it, you will not see it until the fashion show.’ ‘But...but...how do you know it will fit,’ said Diva. ‘ Oh it will fit,’ said Rosette Gabrielle ‘ I promise you ...and you will look beautiful in it …… and she was right !!!’
